The environment surrounding the Subaru Telescope
Razor-sharp astronomical imaging available nowhere else on Earth
Stars twinkle because the earth's atmosphere causes their starlight to waver. The air surrounding the summit area of Maunakea, where the Subaru Telescope is located, contains little water vapor, while the air currents over the peak are highly stable. As a result, the location is blessed with excellent seeing*, with image perturbations of just 0.5 arcseconds or less. The environment atop Maunakea offers razor-sharp astronomical imaging available nowhere else on Earth.
