Maunakea, the mountain on whose summit area the Subaru Telescope stands, has an elevation of 4,207 m. It forms part of the chain of volcanoes that makes up the Big Island of Hawaii.
Maunakea is such an ideal location for astronomy that more than 10 of the world's leading astronomical observatories are located there. From the facilities at the foot of the mountain in the City of Hilo, the summit area of Maunakea can be reached in about 2 hours.
