Subaru Telescope International Partnership - Workshop support program
日本語/Japanese
Objectives:
Subaru Telescope / NAOJ is working toward international partnership for joint operation of the Subaru Telescope. In March 2017, we had Subaru Telescope International Partnership Science and Instrumentation Workshop, where we concluded that having small-scale, science oriented workshops is important to promote science and instrumentation collaboration between potential Subaru partner countries. This program aims at supporting such workshops.
Goals:
- Sharing future perspective and strategy to use Subaru Telescope in a specific research field.
- Promotion of collaboration among researchers in Japan and potential partner countries.
- Identify short-term science collaboration programs which can be started immediately or as an extension of existing collaboration.
- Identify future medium-sized science collaboration programs (approx. 40 nights or less, i.e., size of intensive programs), after establishment of the Subaru international partnership
- Making suggestions and requests on future plan of the Subaru Telescope:
- Telescope operations (e.g. open-use categories, scheduling, observing modes)
- Instrumentation (e.g. suggestions from scientific demands, joint instrument development plan)
Expected support and budget size:
- Travel support for invited speakers and other participants, especially young researchers / students, and cost for venue (if necessary)
- The total budget of this programs is 4 million JPY (approx. 36,000 USD).
- There are two categories depending on the support size:
- (a) maximum 2 million JPY (moderate size workshop/conference)
- (b) maximum 500K JPY (small size workshop/meeting).
- Budget will be handled by Subaru Mitaka office - we will not transfer the budget to other institutes.
Applicant eligibility and prerequisites:
- Researcher(s) belonging to institutes in Japan or potential partner countries (Australia, Canada, China, Korea, Taiwan) can apply for this support.
- The workshop participants should include researchers from multiple potential partner countries (other than Japan).
- Participants are not necessarily limited to researchers in Japan / potential partner countries.
- The workshop should be held sometime between August 1, 2017 and March 16, 2018.
- At least one session should be devoted for discussion on science or development in the era of Subaru international partnership.
- The organizing committee should include researchers from at least one (hopefully more than one) potential partner countries and at least one Subaru Telescope staff.
- In the case of application category (a), the workshop should be announced to the communities in the potential partner countries.
- Workshop venue can be either in Japan, Hilo, or in partner countries (but be aware of the amount of budget that can be supported).
- Note: Please contact subaru_WSsupport_2017 [at] naoj.org in advance if you plan to have a workshop outside Japan or Hilo. There may be some restrictions in e.g. bank transfer, which might affect our support.
- The successful applicant must submit a report to Subaru Telescope within 14 days after the workshop.
Application and selection process:
- Applicants should submit a form to subaru_WSsupport_2017 [at] naoj.org with necessary information.
- Deadline: June 30, 2017
- A committee nominated by Subaru Telescope director will review the proposals and the director will make a decision.
- Higher priority will be given to programs which will be more beneficial for the Subaru Telescope partnership.
- It is possible that we will allocate budget smaller than the request.
Please feel free to contact subaru_WSsupport_2017 [at] naoj.org if you have any questions regarding the application.
