Call for Subaru Archive Science Proposal FY2020
(toward the Subaru international partnership)
日本語/Japanese
1. Background
Since FY2017, Subaru Telescope supported science/instrumentation
workshops toward the international partnership of future Subaru operation.
Because it is not realistic to have large international workshops or to have
many international travels in this fiscal year due to the COVID-19 pandemic,
we decided to support international research collaboration activity to
accelerate publication of existing Subaru data in this fiscal year (FY2020).
2. Call for Research
Research projects using existing/archival Subaru data based on a
collaboration between scientists in Japan (Japanese nationality or
Japanese affiliation) and scientists in other countries. Subaru data
should play major roles in the proposed research. The roles of
Japanese and non-Japanese co-I(s) must be clearly stated in the
application. We can consider teams collaborating with any country
(not restricted to the “partner candidates” of Subaru), but we may
put higher priority for projects which are expected to support the Subaru
partnership discussion from a long-term perspective.
3. Eligibility and requirements
- “Japanese” scientists (scientists who have Japanese nationality or those who are affiliated at Japanese institutes) can apply.
- Graduate students in Japan (or Japanese nationality) can also apply.
- Subaru data should play major roles in the research publication.
- The roles of Japanese and non-Japanese scientists should be clealy stated.
- Preferably a paper will be submitted (or accepted for publication) within FY2020 (March 2021).
- Even if it is expected to take longer time for publication, we welcome projects proposing an excellent use of Subaru archival data.
- Please note that the budget can be used only in this fiscal year.
- You can propose a research project based on public/archival data or your own data (obtained as PI/co-I).
- For non-Japanese PI - we recommend the team to include at least one Japanese speakers for smooth communication with the observatory.
4. Expected support and budget size
- Maximum 400,000 JPY (approx. 3,500USD) for each project.
- We may consider reduced allocation if necessary.
- We plan to approve ~3-4 projects.
- The budget can be used for any domestic/international travel expenses related to the proposed research (e.g. attending a team meeting, conferences, etc).
- Any team member(s) can use the budget, as long as they have bank account in Japan.
- The budget can also be used for publication fee (if the paper is accepted for publication within FY2020).
- Budget will be handled by Subaru - we will not transfer the budget to other institutes.
- The budget will not be carried over to the next fiscal year (the remaining budget at the end of February 2021 will be returned to Subaru.)
- The budget will not be used for purchasing items in principle.
- We will ask the successful applicants to give a presentation in the Subaru Users’ Meeting, and also to release their publication from Subaru website.
5. Application and selection
- Applicants must submit a form with necessary information (in English or Japanese) with the PDF format.
- Deadlie: June 26, 24:00 (in Hawaii time)
