国立天文台ハワイ観測所では、HSC, PFSに続くすばるの大きな将来計画として、
広視野(15')に渡ってシーイングの大幅な改善(0.2" in K)を実現する GLAO
(Ground-Layer Adaptive Optics; 地表層補償光学)計画を推進しております。
この計画では、大気揺らぎのうち地表面に近い層だけを補正し、さらに副鏡を
可変にする事でことで広視野に渡って星像の改善を得るGLAOシステムと、それ
に対応する新たな広視野近赤外線撮像分光装置を開発し、2020年代におけるす
ばるの主要装置として運用することを目指しています。
このシーイング改善によって、個々の天体からの光を検出器上のより狭い範囲
に効率的に集めることによってS/Nを改善するのに加え、例えばこれまで点とし
て見てきた遠方銀河の大量サンプルの内部構造を分解したり、銀河系中心部の
多くの星の運動を測定して質量構造を探ったりと、観測天文学の各方面にブレー
クスルーをもたらす可能性があります。
本計画では、これまでも何度か小規模でサイエンス検討会を行って参りました
が、この度ハワイ観測所とすばる小委員会の共催で研究会を開催する運びにな
りました。このワークショップでは、より広いコミュニティーの皆様と、本計
画について議論し、キーサイエンスの立案および装置仕様への要求の定義をし、
今夏に予定されている本計画のレビュー(Conceptual Design Review)に向けた
詳細な概念提案に結びつける事を目的としております。
北海道大学の協力を得まして、梅雨のない快適な札幌で開催できることになり
ました。皆さん是非この機会に本ワークショップにご参加いただき、すばる望
遠鏡のGLAO計画を理解し、科学提案や装置提案について議論し、本計画を盛り
上げて戴ければ幸いです。なお、外国人の参加者も見込んでおりますので、会
議の主要部分は英語で行います。

We are planning to have a GLAO (ground-layer adaptive optics) system
for the Subaru telescope which is expected to provide us with a great
seeing improvement (0.2" in K) over a wide-field (15'). We plan to
have a conceptual design review in this summer and submit a large
grant application in this fall. We are also seeking for international
partners. We have been discussing science cases for GLAO+NIR
instruments among small groups several times, but at this stage we
would like to expand this activity to wider Subaru/Japanese community.
We are going to have the following meeting at Hokkaido Univ.
(Sapporo) in mid June, supported by Subaru telescope, Subaru advisory
committee and Hokkaido Univ. The main purpose of this meeting is to
set key science cases and feedback to instrumentation to go with GLAO.
This meeting will be held in English as we will welcome some
participants from abroad.

17th. If you just attend the meeting, registration can be done by Jun
7th. Travel support may be requested by May 17th, although the budget
