We aim to establish a method to identify detached black hole/neutron star companions orbiting normal stars, using photometric flux variations of the star due to tidal distortion. We propose follow-up spectroscopy of candidate stars whose Kepler light curves exhibit periodic variability that could be explained by the companions more massive than the “primary" stars. The HDS spectra will be used (i) to validate the mass estimate based on the light curve using radial velocity measurements, and (ii) to check the absence of secondary set of spectral lines to establish that the companions, if indeed massive, are compact objects.
