We propose to conduct a mapping of optical polarization of the background stars toward the cold dense starless core FeSt 1-457 with an unprecedentedly deep sensitivity that see through AV ≈ 10 mag. The aim is to constrain dust grain alignment mechanism in a cold dense environment that is still an unresolved problem of astrophysics. We already have deep near-infrared (NIR) polarimetric data toward the core. Together with the Subaru/FOCAS data, the Serkowski’s law, a generally accepted polarization-extinction relationship in diffuse ISM, can firstly be tested in a cold dense environment.
