(Proposal ID) S13B-085 (PI) Crossfield, Ian (Proposal Title) Carbon Abundances and Bolometric Luminosities of Hot Jupiters (Abstract) Infrared photometry of large, short-period transiting planets (hot Jupiters) has begun to provide a rough outline of their composition and atmospheric structure. However, significant degeneracies remain: in molecular abundances, the overall atmospheric temperature/pressure structure, and the planetsf global energy budgets. Spectroscopy, properly calibrated, can best improve our understanding of these planets. We have recently demonstrated that MOIRCS can attain the precision necessary for such observations. We propose to observe NIR emission of two hot Jupiters with MOIRCS via R1300 multi-object spectroscopy. Our observations will improve estimates of carbon abundances and the structure of these planetsfdayside atmospheres.
