(Proposal ID) S13B-022 (PI) Yagi, Masafumi (Proposal Title) Spectroscopy of Halpha emission from Magellanic Stream (Abstract) From narrow band imaging at the Kiso observatory, we detected Halpha emitting regions in the field of the tip of Magellanic Stream(MS). We propose 1) to measure the redshift of the Halpha emission and 2) to measure nebular emission to get hints on their ionization source. The previous studies of Halpha of MS were based on Fabry-Perot instruments of smaller telescopes and therefore no images shows the morphology of Halpha emitting regions, and our detection is the first "image" of the emission structure. The problem is that HI survey shows there are two HI structure overlapping; one is -40 km/s and the other, the MS HI, has -200 km/s. The spectroscopy with FOCAS will answer whether the emission is MS origin or local. If they are MS Halpha, it is the first wide- range spectrum of the emission of ionized gas in MS, and they set constraints on the ionization physics of MS. If it is found to be local one, on the other hand, the origin of narrow and straight shape of the filaments is another interest.
