(Proposal ID) S10A-018 (PI) Trump, Jonathan (Proposal Title) Optically Dull AGN: Obscured, Diluted, or Radiatively Inefficient? (Abstract) We propose spectropolarimetry of three optically dull AGN, which have the bright X-ray emission of an AGN but lack broad or narrow optical emission lines. The observations described here would be sensitive to a 0.1% polarized component, allowing us to directly detect or place limits on the importance of obscuration in the lack of emission lines. Optical dullness in AGN may also be caused by dilution or radiatively inefficient accretion, and spectropolarimetry allows us to directly distinguish these causes from obscuration. The three AGN we propose to observe already have deep multiwavelength observations from our previous work, making them perfect for additional spectropolarimetry.
