Effect of the Earthquake at the Subaru Telescope

November 12, 2019
Last updated: July 1, 2023

On November 11, 2019, at around 6:30 am (Hawaii local time), a magnitude 4.9 earthquake occurred near the summit of Maunakea on the Big Island, Hawaii. The Subaru Telescope was in an emergency stop due to the earthquake. There was no human damage and no serious damage to the facilities or the telescope. In order to restore the telescope from the emergency stop, the observatory decided to cancel nighttime observations from November 11 to 13. It is expected that it may take more time to restore the telescope.
