Effects of the Massive Power Outage at the Maunakea Summit Area (Report 2)

September 27, 2018
Last updated: July 1, 2023

When the massive power outage occurred across the Maunakea summit area on September 13, 2018 (Hawai'i Standard Time), one of the uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs) that supplies power to the Subaru Telescope did not function properly. Therefore open use observations at the Subaru Telescope have been cancelled for the time being.

The observatory is currently implementing urgent countermeasures, which are expected to require about another 10 days. Considering this situation, we decided to cancel the open use observations until at least October 7, 2018. We are aiming to resume observations on October 8, using observing instruments that are operational at that time.
