Effect of the Earthquakes at the Subaru Telescope

May 5, 2018

Here we announce the status of the Subaru Telescope, as of May 5, 2018, after the M 6.9 earthquake and its aftershocks occurred in the afternoon on May 4, 2018.

  • No human damage to our staff and students based in Hawaii, and visitors to the observatory, is reported.
  • The observatory is assessing damage to its facilities from the earthquakes.
  • Careful investigation of the overall impact on the telescope, enclosure, and observing instruments will continue for some time.
  • Therefore the observations have been canceled until the night of May 9, 2018.
  • The summit facility tour program scheduled on May 9-10, 2018 has also been canceled.
  • Observations will resume as soon as it is confirmed that the facilities are safe, and the telescope, enclosure, and instruments are normally operational to do so.
