AstroDay
in Hawaii
Subaru Telescope participated in AstroDay 2k2,
the first celebration of Astronomy Day in Hilo Hawaii on April
20, 2002. Subaru Telescope's display was one of the largest
and most popular among those from over twenty observatories
and community groups participating in a very successful event
designed to "bring astronomy to the people." Children
and adults lingered to look at a model of the summit of Mauna
Kea, to move the one fiftieth scale model of the telescope and
dome, to read about scientific results, and to watch a video
about the construction of the telescope. Apart from Subaru Telescope's
official participation, several staff members volunteered their
personal time to help pull off the event, the brain child of
Gary Fujihara, a telescope operator at Subaru Telescope.
During
a quiet moment, Yusaku Yamashita, student
help (far right), answers questions about the summit
of Mauna Kea while kids try out the controls of the
telescope model and a small group gathers to watch a
video on the construction of Subaru Telescope.

NHK
Live Programs from Mauna Kea
On April 23 and 24 (JST), NHK (Japan Braodcasting
Corp.) held live television broadcasts from the summit of
Mauna Kea. A super-sensitive high definition camera attached
to the Subaru Telescope captured beautiful real-time color
images of spiral galaxies M94 and M51, diffuse nebulae M16
and M17, and the globular cluster M28.
