Hyper Suprime-Cam

Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) is a gigantic digital camera for the 8.2 m Subaru Telescope which was developed by National Astronomical Observatory of Japan in collaboration with international academic and industrial partners. Because the telescope is large, its camera is also large; the height is taller than human being and its weight is about three tons.

The camera consists of lens, filters, shutter, and light sensors. The sensor is newly developed highly sensitive CCD and the pixel number is 870 Mega pixels in total that cover 1.5° field-of-view in diameter. These CCDs are installed inside a vacuum cryogenic dewar and are operated at -100℃ where the dark current becomes negligible. The diameter of the first lens is 82 cm and the length of the lens barrel is 165 cm. Mechanical alignment of optics (e.g. focus adjustment) is realized by the precision hexapod system that consists of six customized actuators.

HSC saw the first light in 2013 and started to serve for open-use observations from 2014 as a facility instrument.

The Hyper Surime-Cam Project is supported by Grants-In-Aid (JSPS, MEXT), ASIAA, Princeton, IPMU and NAOJ.
