Subaru Open Use Intensive Programs

The following proposals are regarded as "Intensive Programs".
(i) Proposals which request 6 nights or more with a maximum of 10 nights within a semester.
(ii) Proposals which request a total of maximum 20 nights over several semesters (4 consecutive semesters at maximum from S09A to S10B; namely from 2009 February 1 to 2011 January 31).
Compared to the Normal Proposals, the maximum page limit of scientific justification is 5 pages, and a different reviewing process is applied.

Purpose: Subaru Open Use Intensive Programs provide the opportunity for researchers to proceed with large programs of advanced study that can only be achieved with the unique capability of Subaru Telescope and its instruments and needs an allocation of significant telescope time.

[Important notice for applicants] Given the large amount of telescope time allocated, the P.I. of the approved Intensive Program Proposal is under an implicit obligation to intensively devote to this project, as far as researches using the Subaru Telescope are concerned. In this sense, it is not desirable that anyone doubles as the P.I.'s of Intensive program and Normal program simultaneously. Accordingly, in case that Normal program proposals were submitted from the same P.I. of the running Internsive Program, such proposal may suffer some disadvantages in the assessment by TAC because of this guideline.

1. REQUIREMENTS FOR PROPOSAL SUBMISSION

  1. Intensive Programs may use any instruments available for Normal Open Use, and are subject to the same restrictions which apply to Normal Open Use programs. Also, no visiting instrument may be used for S09A Intensive Programs.
  2. Identical or very similar proposals should not be submitted to both Normal and Intensive Prorams.
  3. Even if your proposal is submitted as an Intensive Program, it is possible to be accepted as a Normal Program.
  4. There will be an Oral Review of Intensive Program proposals by the Time Allocation Committee (See section 3 below).
  5. The PIs of accepted Intensive Program proposals must report their observations and achievements to the Time Allocation Comittee. The Comittee will re-judge the assignment of observing time for each semester.
  6. Reports of each accepted Intensive Program must be presented at the Subaru Users' Meeting. The Committee may ask the PIs to provide a status report at any time.

2. PROPOSAL SUBMISSION

Use the same Application Form as for Normal Open Use proposals. Check the box in Entry 18 "Subaru Open Use Intensive Programs". The Scientific Justification must be described in English within 5 pages, and its direct Japanese translation may be attached. (i.e., not necessarily required). Please address the following points in the Scientific Justification:

  • uniqueness
  • impact to the astronomical community
  • comparison with similar firmly planned or ongoing programs at other large telescopes
  • outline of the schedule to complete the program
  • roles of the Co-Investigators
The Co-Is should be fixed at the time of proposal submission.

The procedure of submitting proposals for Intensive Programs is the same as that for Normal Program submission. See Section 3 in "Call for Proposals" for more details.

3. ORAL REVIEW

Date: early November 2008 (TBA)
Place: Subaru Project meeting room, NAOJ, Mitaka

There will be an Oral Review by the Time Allocation Committee, consisting of a short presentation followed by questions from the Committee. All PIs of Intensive Programs (or alternative persons selected from CoIs in case of unavoidable circumestances) must attend. If there are too many proposals to be reviewed in one day, there may be pre-selection for the Oral Review by the Committee based on the submitted proposals. Presentation via the TV conference system is only allowed for PIs staying at Subaru Telescope (Hilo office). Only domestic travel expense is supplied to the oral presenter.

Whether a submitted proposal is accepted or not will be decided by the Committee based on both the oral presentation and the referee assessments.
