Making User Filters/Grisms
We have been accepting the user filters/grisms since S07A. However, the number of vacant slot on filter/grism turret is VERY LIMITED. You should ask the current availability of the slots to the Support Astronomer (SA) first before starting the project.
MOIRCS filters/grisms are stored in the main dewar which is cooled to 120K. Thermal cycle of the main dewar will take much of cost/manpower/time (at least four weeks with the full 24hr support of BUSY technicians during cooling!). So currently the chance of putting new filters/grisms is usually limited to once a year (usually in summer). Although we will consider the installation as best we can, we can not guarantee the user filter to be installed in MOIRCS by the date you need the filter. Even if you know that your filter/grism has a problem after installation, we cannot remove the filter/grism until next thermal cycle. Enough test should be done before bringing your filters/grisms to the Observatory.
Users planning to make your custom filters/grisms MUST first make contact to the SA for the filter/grism specification. Please submit a proposal for the user filter/grism in any format, but with the clear description of how the development/inspection is planned to do in the team. We may reject the proposal if the develpment plan is poor. It is highly recommended that your team includes specialists of filters/grisms who can take charge of any handing/inspection.
