Transportation Options for the Mauna Kea Summit Area
There is no public transportation to the summit area of Mauna Kea. If you do not already have access to a 4WD vehicle, you will need to rent a 4WD vehicle or hire a van and a driver from a licensed commercial tour operator.
Drive your own 4WD
At present we are aware of only a single rental-car company that provides 4WD vehicles and PERMITS drivers to take them to the summit area of Mauna Kea.
Licensed Commercial Tour Operators
If you are are planning a trip with a large group, you may want to hire a van with a driver. There are currently eight tour operators with licenses to operate in the summit area of Mauna Kea.
