Subaru East Asia Youth Seminar

Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, U.S.A.
March 12 through March 18, 2006
Co-sponsored by Japan Society for the Promotion of Science

November 1, 2005

Dear colleagues,

We are pleased to announce that the first Subaru East Asian Youth Seminar will be held at Royal Kona Resort, Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, U.S.A. from March 12 through March 18, 2006. The organizers hope that this activity will be an annual event, but the continuation is dependent on the funding and staff availability and the feedback from the participants to the seminar to be held.

The purpose of the seminar, from Subaru point of view, is to promote Subaru Telescope to young astronomers in East Asian regions by introducing the facility, the instruments and the recent science outcomes that have been derived from observations at Subaru Telescope. Attending the seminar will be a good chance to see a show case where collaboration among world-class facilities is taking place. Also like other conferences and workshops, this seminar would be a good occasion for each participant to know each other, to discuss science, technical and other regional matters and to promote the collaboration in individual level as well.
The seminar will focus on the synergic observation with large to small telescopes. Both observational and theoretical studies on galaxy formation, dark matter, early universe and star formation are welcomed topics but any science subject that falls into this category will be welcomed.

During the seminar, we are planning the tour to the Subaru Telescope atop of Mauna Kea (Elevation: 4200m) and an excursion to Subaru Telescope base facility, Hilo, Hawaii and other beautiful places on the Big Island of Hawaii.

We are keeping in touch with the regional contacts who represent each region regarding the seminar. We expect participants to be the active scientists who are potential Subaru users. We anticipate graduate students in Ph.D. course, Post-docs and faculty members as primary participants as the carrier of the participants.

If you are interested in attending the seminar either as a lecturer or as a participant, please contact one of contact persons of your region first. We expect the total number of attendees, including lecturers and participants, between 30 and 50. If number of those who are attending exceeds the capacity of the seminar venue, the organizers will make a final decision on the number of attendees from each region after consultation with regional contacts.

At this time, this seminar has been made possible by financial support by Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). The financial support will be covering the cost of lodging, transportation within the island, the summit tour, an excursion as well as all the cost for convention for expected number of participants. However, it is very difficult to extend our financial support to travel costs of all the participants. We are currently discussing how we should deal with the matter with contact persons for each region. We will highly recommends those who plan to attend the seminar to find a way to finance airfare to get to Hawaii.

We are excited to announce the seminar and sincerely hope to see you at the seminar in Hawaii.

Please stay tuned for the seminar updates at http://www.naoj.org/Information/SEAS/index.html

Sincerely and with Aloha,
