Telescope Support Scientist (TCS)

Telescope Support Scientist (TCS) – ID# 28463. National Astronomical Observatory of Japan. Regular, Full-Time, Limited Term (approximately five (5) years in duration with the possibility of extension), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Subaru Telescope, National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) located in Hilo, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, and availability of funds. Minimum Monthly Salary: Salary commensurate with qualifications. Duties: Leads the Telescope Control System (TCS) Engineering Group in the Telescope Engineering Division and is responsible for and/or participates in the upgrade system design of the TCS, management of the telescope system interfaces, observation and analysis of engineering data and trouble shooting of telescope engineering problems.Pursues astronomical and/or engineering research programs or engineering research and development projects. PRIMARY Qualifications: Education: Ph.D. from an accredited college or university in Astronomy or related field. Experience: One to three (1-3) years of experience in scientific and engineering projects related to modern telescopes and instrumentation for optical and/or infrared astronomical observations and astronomical observations and data reduction in general. Abil/Know/Skills: Proficient knowledge of astronomical telescopes and instrumentation, interface and control systems (both hardware and software). Proficient communication skills in written and spoken Japanese. Good written communication skills in English. Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. Physical/Medical Requirements: Must be able to work at 14,000 feet and pass a post offer high-altitude medical examination. SECONDARY Qualifications: Proficient oral communication skills in English. Previous involvement with hardware and software for eight to ten (8-10) meter class telescope and/or their instrumentation projects and/or knowledge in serve control systems, experience in programming in C or Python, experience in reading mechanical drawings or electrical schematics.
